        Competition with Complements and Substitutes

        • We study price competition between multiproduct firms, which are producing both complements and substitutes. We allow arbitrary combinations of products and generalize the aggregative games approach to characterize prices in equilibrium. Applications to mergers and entry analysis are discussed.

The Heterogeneous Effects of Airline Joint Ventures on Connecting Markets (with Guofu Tan)

        • Our empirical results show that the JV between Aeromexico and Delta Air Lines led to both price increases and decreases in a city-pair market. These effects also depended on the networks of complements and substitutes.

An Analysis of International Airline Alliances and Joint Ventures

        • We show that inter-hub competition between international airline carriers can generate externalities to other markets. As a result, joint ventures may not always be able to eliminate the double marginalization problem and reduce the prices of codeshare itineraries.

Competitive Effects of Joint Ventures in the International Airline Industry

        (with Guofu Tan)

Transportation Research Record, 2022, Vol. 2676, No. 2, pp. 59–68.

        • We empirically evaluate the impact of the joint venture between American Airlines and British Airways. We identify new airfare increases caused by the joint venture, which shows that vertical mergers involving multiproduct firms may not always be beneficial to consumers.
        • This project is sponsored by the ACRP (Airport Cooperative Research Program) Graduate Research Award.
